New Exhibit at the Pacific Aviation Museum

The Pacific Aviation Museum in Pearl Harbor plans to open an exhibit on Pan American World Airways next month.

Artifacts and memorabilia from the airline's early years in 1930s and 1940s and from beginning of the jet age in the 1960s are expected to be featured in the displays.

Uniforms, original posters, signs, and navigation tools are among the items expected to be shown. The exhibit is designed to change and grow as more artifacts are contributed by friends of the now defunct airline.

The exhibit is scheduled to open on Oct. 22.

The Honolulu Community College website, PacificAerospace.org, says Pan Am flew first commercial flight from the mainland to Hawaii in April 1935. The M-130 Flying boat made the trip in 17 hours and 14 minutes.

New Disney Resort

Walt Disney Imagineers have created a new resort called Aulani, a place celebrating Hawaiian history, culture and artwork, on the western shores Oahu in Ko Olina. It opens Aug. 29 and is hiring people now. Aulani in Hawaiian means the messenger of a chief. The 21-acre resort has 460 Disney vacation villas; 359 hotel rooms; a spa and fitness center; three pools and a floating stream; a children’s water recreation area; and a marine preserve and private reef. Relay for Life

Give and Take

Aside from selling it, giving it away or trashing it, there has been very little that students could do to get rid of their stuff at the end of each semester/term—until now. Last semester, recent graduate Kelly Nelson organized and ran the very first BYUH Give And Take Event. On day one of the event, April 11, students brought their items, and on April 12, a line of people came to look at and “take” donated items. Nelson is working on organizing a Give And Take Event for the Spring Term. Instead of having a single day for donations, Nelson hopes to devote an entire week for the “give” portion of the event.

Changes to the Third Stake presidency

The BYUH Third Stake presidency announced boundary changes and new bishoprics for the 10th and 11th Wards last Sunday. Those living on Laie Point to the left stop sign, at the top of Anemoku Street, will now attend BYUH 11th ward, while those to the right will continue going to BYUH 10th ward. The 11th ward’s new bishop is Fehi Niutupuivaha, and his counselors are Nihi Napoleon and Tai Vuniwai. The 10th ward’s new bishop is Aaron Keo, joined by Kawika Vendiola and Spencer Hannemann.

Research associateships

The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team had their Cinderella run through the NCAA II Tournament strike midnight in the middle of the afternoon today as they Seasiders came up just three points short in the national title game, losing to second-ranked Bellarmine 71-68 on national television. The Seasiders, who finish the year 22-9, made a magical run through the tournament as a seventh seed in the West Regional but fell short when their shooting touch failed in the second half.
The Seasiders, who had shot over 60 percent from the field in victories over Bloomfield and West Liberty in their previous games at the Elite Eight, shot just 25 percent (7-25) from the field in the second half today and just 38.1 percent (24-63) for the game.
Despite their shooting woes, the Seasiders battled back from a 63-55 deficit with 7:33 to play in the game. A three-pointer by sophomore Junior Ale closed the gap to just a single point, 66-65 with 2:37 remaining. A jumper by Bellarmine’s Chris Dowe with 59 seconds to go increased the lead to three and a Braydon Hobbs free throw with 23 seconds left made it a 69-65 game. However, senior Heath Gameren drilled a three-pointer for his only points of the game to cut the lead to 69-68 with 11 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately for the Seasiders, those were the last points they scored. Another Bellarmine free throw with nine seconds left made it a two-point game, but Jet Chang was unable to get a jumper to go down and Bellarmine made another late free throw for the final margin.
Chang, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and to the All-Tournament Team, scored 35 points to keep BYU-Hawaii within striking distance throughout the game. Chang went 12-20 from the field, 4-5 from three-point range, and 7-8 from the free throw line as well as grabbing six rebounds in the game. Ale came off the bench to score 17 points and went 6-12 from the field and 4-7 from long range. Jake Dastrup hit three three-pointers for nine points and Marques Whippy led the team on the boards with eight rebounds. Whippy and Gameren each handed out four assists and Whippy blocked two shots.
“We kept fighting and we had our opportunities to win at the end,” BYU-Hawaii Head Coach Ken Wagner said. “It seemed like every time we had an open three-pointer or layup, we would turn it over or miss the shot. I am proud of our effort but unfortunately we didn’t capitalize on our chances.”
Chang became the first player from a losing team to be named the Most Outstanding Player since Kentucky Wesleyan’s Antonio Garcia in 1998. Chang averaged 33.3 points over the three games that began with a 22-point performance on March 23 during a 96-89 victory over Bloomfield (NJ). It continued with a 43-point explosion vs. West Liberty (WV) in a 110-101 semifinal triumph on March 24. Chang’s shooting was tremendous. From the floor he hit 35 of 53 field goal attempts for a robust 66.0% (35 for 53) accuracy rate. He was even more deadly from beyond the arc, making 12 of 17 three-point jumpers (70.6%) and averaging 4.0 three-pointers made per game. Equally impressive was his shooting from the free throw line where he hit 18 of 21 (85.7%). He averaged 4.7 rebounds per game while dealing out 3.0 assists per contest. He averaged 1.0 steals per game and a 1.0 assist/turnover ratio, all while averaging 34.3 minutes played per game. Chang finishes the season as the leading scorer in the PacWest after averaging 21.2 points per game.

The votes are in, and Chase Carlston and Mandy Leuluai are the winners of the 2011-2012 BYUHSA elections. The candidates won with 62 percent of the vote in the primary election. Applications for the new presidential team will be available Monday, March 7. at 12:00 p.m. for one executive vice president and seven vice presidents.

Copyright Week Brings Awareness to Campus

Richard G. Scott visits Mozambique

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the 12 recently traveled to Mozambique, and other apostles have recently visited the Marshall Islands, other areas of the Pacific, and Central America. The first time Elder Scott visited Mozambique, there were only 40 members. On his recent second visit there were over 5,000 members in two districts, with 19 branches. He excited the members in Mozambique by speaking Portuguese, the official language.

The activity will end at noon with BBQ for lunch. BYUHSA says, “You’ll come away with a warm feeling that you are saving the earth by removing one piece of litter at a time.”

An earthquake with the magnitude of 6.3 hit Christchurch, New Zealand, one of the country’s biggest cities, on Tuesday, Feb. 22 New Zealand time and Monday, Feb. 21 Hawaii time. More than 100 people were thought to be trapped in the rubble as darkness—and drizzling rain—fell Tuesday night. Power and telephone lines were knocked out, pipes burst flooding the streets with water, cars parked on the street were buried under rubble, the airport was closed and the Christchurch Hospital was briefly evacuated before reopening. During hours of chaos in the city, people dug through rubble with their hands to free people trapped. Firefighters climbed extension ladders to pluck people stranded on roofs to safety. Laie without a temple

The Laie Hawaii temple went from overflowing with people and workers for its last open week to a lonely, empty building, soon to be renovated. The temple was open after-hours to accommodate the crowds of people coming to squeeze one last session in before the temple closed.

For hundreds in Laie and thousands on Oahu, life will be different for the next 18 months. Workers, missionaries, community members, students and tourists will surely miss attending the beautiful temple.
You never appreciate what you have until it is taken away. For now, the exterior can still be enjoyed if you can ignore some scaffolding on the side.

It has only been a few weeks, and still, many temple regulars are feeling a loss with the closure of the temple. With accommodations and travel to Kona still a little steep for students, many are forced to sacrifice and save up for a future trip. We were truly spoiled with the temple right next door.

Christmas Break Burnout

The holidays, although usually not as filled with responsibility as a semester, can wear you out.

After the excitement and fun of the holidays, going back to school and work can seem like going to get a root canal.

Whether you celebrated the holidays with family or stayed and enjoyed them with friends, changing over from break-mode to student-mode can be quite an adjustment.

Fortunately, America feels strongly enough about its leaders (at least the ones in the past) to give us a national holiday. President's Day, Feb. 16th, is a Monday, which means a three day weekend is on the horizon.

President's Day normally does not receive the same amount of attention as the "festive" holidays preceding it, but I find myself already looking forward to it with the same amount of excitement.

As a suggestion to those who might be coming off of the Christmas-break high and suffering from the back-to-school low, a paper chain might help keep your holiday spirits up as you look forward to our next break. One less link means one day closer to vacation.

While some may say our world is coming to an end, perhaps one interpretation could be that the world as we know it - the short-term thinking, wasteful, polluting world - could perhaps be taking its final bow.

Though there are many undeniable effects - global warming, landfills taking all they can, etc. - there are some wonderful, innovative things happening. While the world may be undeniably heating up, people are undeniably becoming smarter. Here a few interesting energy solutions I found:

In Portugal, the "Agucadoura" was built, consisting of three Wave Energy Converters generating a total of 2.25 Mega watts.

These elongated metal contraptions bob up and down with the waves, while internal pistons, attached to the sea floor, remain stationary and pump hydraulic fluid. This drives electric generators, whose power is brought ashore by underwater electrical cables.

The wave farm is now tapping into enough constant, renewable energy to power 1500 homes.
Who knew there was so much power in the ocean waves?

If we laid these 459-foot orange caterpillars all over the world's oceans, we could tap 2 Tera watts of power, twice the consumption of the entire world. This perhaps may sound impractical, but it is a step in the right direction, using what we already have, the ocean, instead of wishing for something we don't have.

With all that's going wrong in the world it is easy to get preoccupied with all the negative things in the world. It can be easy to loose faith in the each other when things are going wrong and we hear of the awful things people do to each other around the world. But things remind me that human beings are all so beautiful. We have the ability to make ourselves happy and far greater, make one another happy!

No matter how small you think you are, I hope you remember Helen Keller's,

"I am one, but I am still one, I cannot do everything but I can do something. "

There is nothing greater than having someone to smile, laugh and dance with. In those few moments, dancing, smiling, laughing and even crying it becomes so apparent that we are more alike then different.

It is easiest to see how human we all are, that no matter what were never alone. Thank goodness for these short but powerful moments, for they are perhaps what get us through all the others. Remember the power of one is great!! You do make a difference!

BYUH alumna, who goes under the name, “Girl in Bathtub Number one” notes seeing her holy chip as early as high school. “I remembered several days in a row seeing the most beautiful sunsets/sunrises. Upon seeing them I was taken aback with emotion and felt very filled with my Savior's love for me. I determined right then and there that every time a sunset or sunrise caught my eye, it was my Father in Heaven telling me how much he loves me.”

Dustin Geddes says music is his holy chip, “sometimes words will pop into my head or come on the radio and it's almost as if it's read my mind.” Geddes tells the following narrative, “This summer I grew a beard and I was thinking about how it would affect my love life. Then I heard this song that talks about growing a beard. The lyrics were, ‘I know you love a man whose follicles are growing just for you” Geddes was encouraged by this “sign” but unfortunately said that his whiskers never brought him the love he had been waiting all summer for.

Shem Greenwood said, “I burnt a pancake one time and I thought I could see the future. Sometimes when I’m trying to figure things out, I try to stare at it. Greenwood references this picture:

Priya Ramadantrum said that her holy chip is “...people. Sometimes when I'm having a bad day, I see someone and I know Heavenly Father has put them there for me”.

Vada Moorse said her holy chip is, “The human brain. I think it's so incredible the way it works. The most simple, direct manner. I don’t think science could ever toss this up.”

Danilo Lommatzson, freshman in IBM from Argentina, said, “The only special thing I can think of is friends. They way He puts us all together."

“Like the frosted flake in the shape of Texas?” Alex Thorson said his holy chip is, “My wife."

Zack Hunt, freshman from Nevada, said, “The scriptures are my holy chip. And I'm leaving for a mission in August of next year."

Feral cats have 9 lives, you only have 1: Make a difference in the life of a cat!

Jumping out of garbage cans, sneaking into dorms, licking their chops under tables. The feral cat, though not completely feral because of their reliance on humans, have spurred a bit of a controversy at BYU Hawaii.

Are they friend or foe?

What many people fail to understand is that trying to tame a feral cat would be the equivalent to trying to put a leash on a raccoon or trying to engrave your name on the collar of a grizzly bear. Though most ferals are kind and loving at heart, it is simply impossible to tame them. Therefore, taking them into our homes may not be the best solution.

The ancestors of these cats actually came over with settlers and are now a part of local culture. So, since we human beings introduced these species here, aren't we responsible for paying reparations to these cats by helping them get by?

According to neighborhoodcats.org, the best method is the TNR or "trap, neuter, return" method. This respects a feral cat's wild state. The neutering of the feral prevents tremendous suffering and shields the cats from the hostility their behavior might otherwise draw from human neighbors. The return of them to their own territory and the providing of adequate food and shelter gives them the opportunity to live among their own, to be free, and to answer to their own unique natures.

BYU- Hawaii Biochemistry student, Pehrson Hawkley, has a motivated soul and a drive for success that has inspired many of his friends and classmates. One day after his classmates found out that he got an excellent grade on a test, a female student congratulated him and said, “I thought you were a stupid kid who just went to the beach all day and surfed.” Pehrson laughed and said, “nope!”

John Hathaway, who worked with Pehrson as a pre-dental student says, “Pehrson is very dedicated to school and is always willing to help out someone in need, and also so willing to share his brain.”

Pehrson, was born in Arizona but moved around a lot because his father, Joel, was in the Air Force. Pehrson graduated high school in New Jersey and feels like his home is in New Jersey, where he learned a lot of life’s lessons. He is the oldest child in his family of four children, with one brother serving an LDS mission in Argentina and a brother and sister at home; Hawkley is a shining example to his younger brothers and sister of what it takes to get what you want.

This year, Hawkley has applied to 14 different dental schools and, this semester alone, will be traveling to such places as Florida, Arizona, California, Ohio, and Kentucky to interview with school officials for a possible acceptance to each school’s program. Between each interview, Hawkley stays busy with schoolwork, a job on campus, and planning his own wedding with his fiancé, Kate LeSueur, a recent BYU-Idaho graduate. Along with the hard work and study, he believes that there is time necessary for relaxation and fun. He enjoys, mainly, surfing the waters of Hawaii, “surfing helps me study better”, says Pehrson with a grin on his face. He also really enjoys dancing, “I love a little dance party,” he says.

Although some might think Pehrson Hawkley is just a stupid blonde kid who surfs all day and does nothing else, we all now know he is an inspiration to many. He has mastered the art of balancing his time to effectively have fun and work hard. It is appropriate to say that there is more than meets the eye. Pehrson’s friends will tell you he is someone to praise and admire.
